Honda to Expand Motorcycle Production Capacity in Vietnam

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Honda Vietnam Co., Ltd. (HVN), a Honda motorcycle and automobile production and sales joint venture in Vietnam, announced plans to expand the annual production capacity of its motorcycle production plant by 500,000 units in order to meet rapidly growing demand in Vietnam.

Since starting up motorcycle production in 1997, HVN increased its annual production capacity to 1.5 million units by 2008. With this newly planned expansion, HVN’s total motorcycle production capacity will reach 2 million units annually.

The capacity increase will be achieved through the expansion of the current plant. The total investment for this expansion is expected to be approximately US$70 million (approximately 6.3 billion yen*1), and is scheduled to become operational within the latter half of 2011.

Industry-wide motorcycle sales in Vietnam totaled 2.26 million units*2 in 2009, up approximately 20% over 2008, achieving steady growth while ranking as the world’s fourth largest motorcycle market after China, India and Indonesia. In particular, sales of automatic transmission (AT) models are growing rapidly, reaching 750,000 units in 2009 (up approximately 70% over 2008). Since the introduction of Click, HVN’s first AT model in Vietnam, in 2006, Air Blade, a sporty AT model, and Lead, another AT model, were added successively in 2007 and 2009, respectively. HVN determined the additional expansion with an eye toward the continuous increase in demand for AT models.

For 14 years since the establishment of the company in1996, HVN’s cumulative motorcycle production has reached 7 million units. HVN also achieved all-time record sales in 2009 for the 14th consecutive year since the company’s establishment. HVN’s market share is also growing steadily and reached 63% in 2009. HVN will continue to enhance its product lineup in order to continue fulfilling the diversifying needs of its customers in Vietnam.

Honda Power Equipment Sets Milestone

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

U.S. - Honda Power Equipment announced today that it has shipped 30 million power products to domestic dealers and distributors since it began offering outdoor power equipment in the United States in 1972.

Beginning U.S. operations with only engines, tillers and generators for sale more than 38 years ago, Honda Power Equipment has evolved into one of the leading global power products suppliers. Honda currently provides more than 60 models of power products, 28 basic models of general-purpose engines and the industry’s widest variety of four-stroke outboard engines.

“We achieved our latest milestone in sales by continually designing and building equipment that exceeds consumer expectation,” said Honda Power Equipment vice president, Scott Conner. “This accomplishment demonstrates that customers value technological and environmental innovation, and Honda remains committed to both.”

At the heart of Honda’s power products business is the organization’s long-standing commitment to engine development and technology. Honda is the world’s largest manufacturer of engines, producing and marketing nearly 24 million units globally for automotive, motorcycle, marine, and power equipment products each year. All Honda engines feature four-stroke overhead valve designs that are optimal for multiple power applications.

Although Honda Power Equipment products are produced at 11 Honda manufacturing facilities worldwide, nearly 75 percent of Honda power products sold in America are produced using domestic and globally sourced parts at the Honda Power Equipment Manufacturing, Inc. (HPE) facility in Swepsonville, North Carolina, which opened in August 1984.

Honda Accord Receives New Styling and Increased Fuel Economy for 2011

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

U.S. - Set to go on sale in mid-August, the 2011 Honda Accord Sedan and Coupe receive significant updates including improved fuel economy, enhanced exterior and interior styling and the addition of a new leather-equipped Special Edition (SE) trim level. Available as either a sedan or a coupe in 4-cylinder and V-6 variations, the Accord offers a unique balance of style, performance, efficiency and value specific to each individual model.

“For 2011, the Accord evolves again with sharpened styling inside and out, fuel economy gains and a broader application of popular features,” said Erik Berkman, vice president of Corporate Planning and Logistics for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Accord is designed to deliver a consistently rewarding ownership experience in the areas that matter most to sedan and coupe drivers.”

Improvements to vehicle aerodynamics, engine friction and transmission gear ratios all contribute to fuel economy improvements. The EPA fuel-economy ratings1 for Accord 4-cylinder sedan models equipped with an automatic transmission improve by 2 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 3 mpg on the highway, for a city/highway rating of 23/34 mpg.

The 2011 Accord Sedan’s exterior expresses a more upscale and powerful presence with a new style for the front grille, front bumper and rear deck lid, along with a new wheel design.

Building on the sedan’s design character, the Accord Coupe’s unique muscular stance is enhanced with a bolder front grille design, new front bumper shape, enhanced brakelight appearance and a new wheel design for V-6 models.

Striking a balance between value and luxury, the Accord SE Sedan offers the additional features from the popular Accord LX-P with the added luxury of leather-trimmed seating, heated seats, driver’s power-lumbar support and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

New features on certain models include steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe, a USB Audio Interface on all coupe models and Accord EX and EX-L Sedans, and a rear view camera on sedans equipped with the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation2 System™. Additionally, Accord EX-L V-6 models receive a two-position memory system for the driver’s seat. Additional interior updates on all models include new seat fabrics on models with cloth seats, an updated instrument panel design and more-refined accent points throughout the interior.

Interior styling on all models provides attainable luxury with generous standard equipment, world-class ergonomics and intuitive vehicle controls. The front seats are designed to provide generous lateral support and to complement the Accord’s sporty side. The fold-down, rear seatback offers cargo-carrying versatility and also includes a lockable pass-through for long items like snow skis.

New for 2011, the most frequently used climate-control buttons are now positioned on the left side of the control stack, closer to the driver for ease-of-use, and less-frequently used buttons are now positioned on the right side. Vehicle clock adjustment is also made easier by more prominent control lettering.

A 190-horsepower, 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine is standard in the Accord EX and EX-L Sedans and Accord LX-S, EX and EX-L Coupes. The 2.4-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine in the Accord LX, LX-P and SE Sedans produces 177 horsepower.

The available 3.5-liter, 24-valve SOHC i-VTEC® V-6 engine produces 271-horsepower and takes advantage of Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology that can deactivate up to half of the cylinders while cruising to improve fuel economy. Preliminary EPA fuel-economy ratings3 for the 2011 Accord V-6 Sedan are 19 city/30 highway mpg, an improvement of 1 mpg in highway driving.

The performance-oriented Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe with the 6-speed manual transmission has a unique 3.5-liter V-6 VTEC engine (without VCM) that provides a performance-tuned valvetrain, intake and exhaust system to broaden the torque curve in the low- to mid-rpm range for enthusiast-level performance.

A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on 4-cylinder models and a 5-speed automatic is available. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard on V-6-powered models. A 6-speed manual transmission is available exclusively on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe.

For safety, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE®) is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment.

The double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension inspire confident handling performance while also providing a comfortable ride. The 2011 Accord Sedan comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, or 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels depending on the model.

Three audio systems are available ““ all with MP3/Windows Media® Audio (WMA) playback capability and an auxiliary input jack. The standard system provides a single-disc CD player, six speakers and 160 watts of power. Radio Data System (RDS) displays information broadcast by participating FM radio stations that often includes call letters, station type (searchable by genre) and programming information. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls come standard on every Accord. The Accord EX Sedan and LX-S Coupe add a 6-disc in-dash changer.

A premium 270-watt audio system comes standard on Accord EX Coupe and Accord EX-L Sedan models, and includes a six-disc CD changer and seven speakers including an 8-inch subwoofer. XM Radio® is standard equipment on all Accord EX-L models.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System (available on Accord EX-L) uses an 8-inch screen and an interface dial for user input. Features include the Zagat Survey® guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions. Accord EX and EX-L Coupe and Accord EX-L Sedan models include Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® as standard equipment for connecting wirelessly with compatible mobile phones.

The Accord Coupe (4-cylinder) has 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment, with 18-inch alloys standard on the Accord V-6 Coupe. All Accords feature four-wheel disc brakes.

Currently more than 95 percent of the Accords sold in the United States are produced4 at Honda of America Manufacturing Inc.’s Marysville Auto Plant in Marysville, Ohio, and at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, LLC, in Lincoln, Alabama. The Marysville plant is the sole global source of the Accord Coupe.

New colour for e-cabs CBR600RR

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Australia- Honda has well and truly dominated the top three places in the World Supersport Championship for the past few years, including a tally of seven consecutive victories between 2002 and 2008, and six out of seven wins in this year’s series.

A masterpiece of race-bred engineering, the CBR600RR has continually raised the bar in both track and road performance.

For 2010, Honda Australia is offering the e-cabs version of the motorcycle in a stunning red and black livery.
The CBR600RR’s ultra-light weight, mass centralisation and compact chassis ensure that its blistering power is balanced by easy handling and faultless road manners.

Its potent engine delivers immediate, exhilarating torque, while its fairing is aggressively aerodynamic, enhances stability and allows maximum enjoyment of the machine’s performance.

Radially-mounted four-piston caliper front disc brakes give it sensational stopping power, while the ABS version features the revolutionary Honda electronically-controlled “Combined ABS”, which delivers all the benefits of ABS in a system designed specifically for Super Sports riders.

Due to its short wheelbase, a sportsbike can be prone to pitching under hard braking, which reduces rear traction. Honda’s electronically-controlled “Combined ABS” minimises this tendency, ensuring superb stability and control under severe deceleration.

2011 Honda CR-Z: Overview

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

U.S.A. - Overview of Honda CR-Z

Developed as a stylish, driver-focused vehicle with an emphasis on efficient “green” performance, the all-new 2011 Honda CR-Z introduces a sleek two-passenger coupe design with quick, sporty handling to the gasoline-electric hybrid segment. A 1.5-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine works with Honda’s unique, compact and lightweight Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to supply both power and efficiency to the CR-Z. A sport-focused six-speed manual transmission is a first for any hybrid. An automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available and includes steering wheel paddle shifters for manual-like gear-ratio control. A new, exclusive 3-mode drive system allows the driver to configure the vehicle’s responsiveness for Sport, Normal or Econ (Economy) driving modes. Driver efficiency tools include Eco Assist and Eco Scoring, which together can help drivers find improvements to efficient driving styles while also comparing economy achievements to previous trips and over the life of the vehicle.

CR-Z Highlights

  • All-new, two-passenger sport hybrid coupe with stylish and aggressive exterior
  • Gasoline-electric hybrid with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology
  • Driver-focused cockpit design with sport seats and 3-D instrumentation
  • New 3-mode drive system tailors throttle response, steering and IMA assistance to the driver’s preference
  • Performance-engineered suspension design
  • Standard safety features: Front, side and side-curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure

The exterior’s “one-motion wedge” body form generates an aerodynamic, sporty style with a low hood and an aggressively wide stance. A lightweight, rigid platform and a chassis with a wide track, short wheelbase and performance-oriented suspension components include aluminum front lower control arms to elevate the vehicle’s handling dynamics. The interior concept is fashioned around a high-tech coupe style and uses premium-quality materials, while also providing useful space for storage of everyday items.

Contributing to the fun-to-drive feel, the instrument panel’s 3-D meter design with its colortransitioning outer ring harmonizes with the hybrid technology by changing from green (efficient) to blue (less efficient) as part of the Eco Assist system, or remaining solid red while in Sport mode.

The “3-mode” hybrid drive system allows for more individualized vehicle performance preferences with Sport, Normal and Econ modes. In Sport Mode capabilities include increasing the IMA power delivery curve at lower RPM and electronically recalibrating steering effort for an enhanced performance feel. Sport mode best represents the dynamically sporty aspect of driving the CR-Z. Alternatively and for increased efficiency, the Econ mode can work with the driver to “smooth” throttle inputs, reduce the air conditioning system’s impact on fuel consumption and potentially activate idle stop sooner when coming to a stop, which is particularly beneficial during stop-and-go city driving. Normal mode provides a balance between Sport and Econ modes, and is a good option for any driving situation. Overall, the CR-Z is designed to encourage elevated efficiency while also providing agile and engaging performance previously unavailable in a hybrid vehicle.

Acura Makes Impressive Gains in 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS)

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

U.S.A. - J.D. Power and Associates today announced its results for the 2010 Initial Quality Study (IQS). For 2010, Acura moved up 12 positions within nameplate performance, garnering second place overall in IQS rankings.

“Acura has listened to its customers and has responded with significant changes to improve overall quality,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. “We are proud to have moved up twelve positions thus making Acura a leading luxury brand in overall IQS standings.”

Among Acura models, the turbocharged RDX crossover SUV was the top ranked Entry Premium Crossover/SUV according to J.D. Power and Associates results while the TL performance luxury sedan ranked second overall in the Entry Premium Car segment.

J.D. Power and Associates IQS results are an important tool for those considering the purchase of a new vehicle. Since 1987, J.D. Power and Associates has been surveying owners of new vehicles to learn the initial quality of new vehicles after 90 days as rated by real-world users. IQS survey responses are reported according to problems per 100 vehicles (indicated by PP100 rating). Consequently, the lower the PP100 score, the fewer IQS problems were reported by survey respondents.

Acura offers a full line of technologically advanced performance luxury vehicles through a network of 270 dealers within the United States. The 2011 Acura lineup features six distinctive models including the RL luxury performance sedan, the TL performance luxury sedan, the TSX sports sedan, the turbocharged RDX luxury crossover SUV, the MDX luxury sport utility vehicle and the ZDX four door sports coupe.

What is meaning of RHD or Right Hand Drive ?

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Vehicles are manufactured in left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations, referring to the placement of the driving seat and controls within the vehicle. There are some countries with RHT and mostly RHD vehicles. The terms nearside and offside are equestrian terms meaning left and right respectively, and are used both in LHT countries (e.g., the United Kingdom) and RHT countries (e.g., Denmark). The terms are often used in the British vehicle maintenance industry to mean the left and right hand side of a motor vehicle.

Some instructions for right hand drive traffic:

  • All traffic is generally required to keep right unless overtaking.
  • Oncoming traffic is seen coming from the left.
  • Left-turning traffic must cross oncoming traffic.
  • A right turn at a red light may be allowed after stopping.
  • Most traffic signs facing drivers/motorists are on the right side of the road.
  • Traffic on roundabouts (traffic circles) goes anticlockwise.
  • Pedestrians crossing a two-way road look first for traffic from their left.
  • The lane designated for normal driving and turning right is on the right.
  • Most dual carriageway (divided highway) exits are on the right.
  • On roads without a footpath pedestrians may be advised to walk on the left.
  • Other vehicles are generally overtaken (passed) on the left, though in some circumstances overtaking on the right is permitted.

Safety factors : Research in 1969 by J. J. Leeming showed countries driving on the left have a lower collision rate than countries driving on the right. It has been suggested this is partly because humans are more commonly right-eye dominant than left-eye dominant. In left-hand traffic, the predominantly better-performing right eye is used to monitor oncoming traffic and the driver’s wing mirror. In right-hand traffic, oncoming traffic and the driver’s wing mirror are handled by the predominantly weaker left eye.

In addition, it has been argued that left sided driving is safer for elderly people given the likelihood of their having visual attention deficits on the left side and the need at intersections to watch out for vehicles approaching on the near-side lane. Furthermore, in a right hand cars, the driver has his right hand on the steering wheel at all times and uses his left hand to change gear.

List of some RHD Countries:
Kenya, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Mongolia, Peru, Saudi Arabia, United States, Vietnam, Switzerland, Burma, South Korea, France

Right Hand Drive in Japan -
Japan does allow both RHD and LHD vehicles on their roads. In some cases the same vehicle is available in both LHD and RHD configurations but most of vehicles are Right Hand Drives. Some time LHD cars are also available drive by foreigners.
