American Honda Expands Vehicle Recall Information Availability for Consumers

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

USA – Partnership with Carfax affords shoppers another way to learn if a Honda or Acura Vehicle has a recall
In an effort to improve access to information as vehicle ownership changes, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., is providing details about Honda and Acura vehicles with open recalls to Carfax.

American Honda’s participation with Carfax seeks to ensure that shoppers can research recall details through a convenient third-party database, in addition to those already available from American Honda. By transferring information daily to Carfax, American Honda is taking additional measures toward enhancing safety recall awareness within the used-car market.

“Recall completion is critically important to us,” said Jim Roach, senior vice president of Parts & Service for American Honda. “By working with Carfax, American Honda provides another way for customers to increase their awareness and need to address recall repairs.”

Millions of used car buyers and sellers every year rely on Carfax Vehicle History Reports as part of their used-car evaluations. Open recall information reported to Carfax for Honda and Acura vehicles appears on Carfax Reports and also is available free to consumers at carfax.com/recall.

“Carfax and American Honda are committed to keeping our roadways safe,” said Larry Gamache, communications director at Carfax. “Adding Honda and Acura to the list of manufacturers providing open recall information to Carfax helps notify car owners and buyers and gets these cars into dealerships to be fixed.”

Anna Engine Plant Celebrates a Quarter Century of Powering Honda and Ohio

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

USA – Honda’s Largest Automobile Engine Plant Celebrates 25 Years.Government and community leaders joined with Honda associates at Honda of America Mfg.’s engine plant to celebrate 25 years of manufacturing at Honda’s largest auto engine plant in the world. In addition to producing the engines that power many Honda and Acura automobiles, the Anna Engine Plant is a driving force in the development of Honda’s North American operations, and it has provided the foundations for the creation of numerous parts plants in Ohio.

Since starting with just 94 associates on July 22, 1985, the Anna Engine Plant has grown to become Honda’s largest automobile engine factory, with an annual capacity of 1.18 million four- and six-cylinder engines – enough to stretch from Cincinnati to Cleveland and back again. The Anna plant supplies engines to five Honda assembly plants in Ohio, Indiana and Ontario, Canada.

“This anniversary is a great opportunity for us to pause and celebrate the many accomplishments of this great team,” said Hidenobu Iwata, president and CEO Honda of America Mfg., Inc. “By working together, we have blazed a path in the industry for quality, fuel economy and environmental technologies.”

The 1.8 million-square-foot Anna Engine Plant is not only Honda’s largest auto engine plant, it is also one of the industry’s most vertically integrated engine plants. In addition to assembling engines, the plant manufactures nearly all of the steel and aluminum parts for those engines, and procures engine and drivetrain components from more than 125 suppliers located mostly in Ohio and neighboring states. The plant’s domestic purchases of parts and raw materials last year exceeded $5.2 billion – representing more than one-third of Honda’s total $13.3 billion in North American parts purchases in 2009.

“From the beginning, the power behind the Anna Engine Plant has been its associates, who make the flexibility of this plant work for our customers, and the strong partnerships with surrounding communities,” said Plant Manager John Spoltman during the anniversary event. “Without the friendship and support of our friends and neighbors, we never could have realized this moment or the tremendous success that this plant and this community have built together over the past quarter century.”

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland joined Honda to commemorate the plant’s milestone. “I congratulate Honda’s leadership and all of the dedicated employees who have worked here to power vehicles for the last quarter-century. Your commitment to quality and innovation has made a truly significant impact on Ohio’s economy and our community,” Strickland said. “Celebrations like this are perfect examples of why I believe in Ohio, because there is no better place to put your plant than Ohio and no better workforce to make your product than Ohioans.”

With employment of 2,400 associates, the plant has produced more than 17 million engines. Cumulative capital investment in the plant exceeds $1.7 billion, including a $140 million series of expansion projects, completed in 2008, for the production of steel engine components previously sourced overseas.

While increasing work under its own roof, the Anna Engine Plant has played a pivotal role in the creation of new parts and component manufacturing operations in Ohio and neighboring states. After starting at the engine plant, the production of automatic transmissions was transferred in 1996 to Honda Transmission Mfg., Inc., in Russells Point, Ohio, which was followed in 2006 by the creation of a second transmission plant in Tallapoosa, Georgia. Anna also served as the “mother plant” for the start of Honda’s other two automobile engine plants in North America – in Lincoln, Alabama, and Alliston, Ontario, Canada.

Throughout its history, the Anna plant also has spun off production of engine and drivetrain parts to suppliers in the region, including production of suspension assemblies, brake components, pistons, exhaust manifolds, transmission shafts, catalytic converters, and rocker arm assemblies. As a result, new supplier operations were established in Ohio communities including Celina, Bucyrus, Cardington, Marion and Fredericktown, and in Coldwater, Michigan.

While its operations have expanded steadily over the years and set new standards in manufacturing, Spoltman said the Anna plant also has focused on being a good corporate citizen and being an accepted member of the community.

“Caring for the environment is one example, and all of us at Honda are very focused on reducing our environmental footprint throughout the world – including right here in Anna,” he said. “Many of you may not know this, but the Anna Engine Plant sends no waste to any landfills from its manufacturing operations.”

In addition to recycling sand from casting operations and other production-related materials, the Anna plant helps Honda’s auto plants in Marysville and East Liberty recycle their scrap materials as well. The two auto plants bale scrap steel from stamping operations, which are reused in Anna-made engine and drivetrain components.

Statewide, Honda employs 13,500 associates at four manufacturing plants, a major vehicle R&D and product engineering center, a regional parts distribution center, and other operations supporting Honda’s auto manufacturing in North America.

Honda’s Marysville Plant Produces 10-Millionth Vehicle

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

USA – The Marysville Auto Plant has become the first Honda plant outside Japan to manufacture* 10 million vehicles with the production this morning of a Honda Accord Sedan. Honda began local auto production in November 1982 at the Marysville plant with an Accord Sedan, and has continued producing that model along with various others.

Identified with a magnetic sign on its hood, associates followed progress of the vehicle in production until it came off the assembly line as a completed product. The milestone Accord was immediately moved into the plant’s West Cafeteria for display alongside the first generation of the Accord produced at the plant.

“Production of this 10 millionth automobile is the result of the shared commitment to our customers, demonstrated over the past 28 years by all of the associates who have worked at the Marysville Auto Plant through the years,” said Hidenobu Iwata, president and CEO of Honda of America Mfg., and leader of Honda’s production operations in North America. “With the support of many other Honda business units, domestic suppliers and our other business partners, Honda associates have demonstrated many times their ability to overcome great challenges and to improve Honda’s competitive characteristics.”

In its 28th year of production, the Marysville plant has undergone continuous innovation, making it one of the most flexible and efficient plants in North America, while achieving top quality performance. The plant ranked fourth in North America in the 2010 Initial Quality Survey conducted by J.D. Power and Associates. In addition to the Accord Sedan and Coupe, the plant currently produces the Acura TL and Acura RDX models.

“I am very proud of the MAP team, and I know firsthand that each associate cares deeply about the product that goes out the door,” said Plant Manager Sam Harpest. “This is a direct reflection of the dedication shared by all Honda associates who have supported production at this plant.”

Nearly all Accords sold in North America are manufactured at the Marysville plant, with more than 8.5 million units produced at the plant on a cumulative basis. The TL, RDX and Accord Coupe are exclusively produced at the Marysville plant, and some V-6 Accord Sedans are manufactured at Honda’s auto plant in Alabama. Consistent with Honda’s commitment to manufacture products close to the customer, more than 84 percent of all Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2009 were produced in North America.

Honda partners with nearly 600 North American suppliers, including 530 in the U.S. and 160 in Ohio, in the production of passenger cars and light trucks. Those purchases totaled $13.3 billion in North America last year, with $5.5 billion in parts coming from Ohio suppliers.

In Ohio, Honda operates another auto plant in East Liberty, a major transmission plant in Russells Point and the Anna Engine Plant in Anna, Ohio. Honda’s largest auto engine plant in the world, the Anna plant will celebrate its 25th anniversary of engine production on Thursday.

In addition to manufacturing, Honda has established substantial R&D and engineering operations in Ohio, along with a regional parts distribution center and other operations that support Honda manufacturing and sales in North America. Among all its operations, the company directly employs 13,500 Ohioans and tens of thousands more through its suppliers and other business partners.

American Honda Announces 2011 Off-Road Models and ATVs

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

USA – American Honda Motor Company’s Powersports Division announced to its dealers an additional release of off-road models and ATVs for the 2011 model year. These Hondas include the CRF450R and CRF250R motocross machines, CRF70F and CRF50F off-road motorcycles, the FourTrax Rancher family of ATVs, and the sporty TRX250X.

“Honda is ramping up its release of 2011 models,” said Powersports Press Manager Bill Savino. “We’re proud to unveil our newest race bikes, the CRF450R and CRF250R motocrossers, plus a wide assortment of Honda off-road machines that have remained extremely popular with recreational riders over the years. With these models for 2011 and more to follow, this is certainly going to be a great year for riding enthusiasts.”

- The Class of the Open-Class MX Bikes: Honda CRF450R
Long regarded as the bike of choice in the big-bore motocross division, the 2011 CRF450R incorporates a host of improvements that will help this bike retain its standing as the yardstick by which all others in the class are compared. Various tweaks to the engine tuning broaden the already prodigious powerband-more low-end pull and midrange grunt-while also enhancing throttle response via a new throttle body.

In addition, revised suspension linkage and settings yield improved control, increased ride plushness and enhanced rear-wheel traction. A new Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) with a larger damper piston (24mm versus 20mm) produces even better tracking traits than before. In addition, the CRF450R now features a newly designed muffler that meets the sound levels of 94 decibels required by some racing organizations in 2011, making it competition-legal right off the showroom floor. All this and more make the 2011 CRF450R a shoo-in to maintain its dominant role among open-class MX bikes. MSRP $8,199. Available in Red beginning October 2010.

- The Award-Winning Honda CRF250R Gets Better Yet in 2011
Despite winning numerous comparison tests and awards in 2010, the CRF250R enters the new season sporting a number of improvements that will help it continue its winning ways. A new Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) with a larger, 24mm damper piston aids tracking precision, and new suspension settings front and rear help give this stellar-handling machine even better chassis balance for 2011. Changes to engine tuning now give the CRF250R a stronger bottom-end and midrange hit, and this 2011 model features a new muffler that meets sound levels of 94 dB required by some racing organizations. MSRP $7,199. Available in Red beginning October 2010.

- Family-Friendly CRF70F and CRF50F Return in 2011
In a completely different segment within the vast Honda spectrum, the family-friendly CRF70F and CRF50F return to the lineup in 2011. Featuring an automatic clutch, low seat height and a three-speed transmission, the CRF70F has long served as a practically perfect choice for beginning riders. Credit too the torquey 72cc air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine that has grown to near-legendary status for reliability over the years. Likewise, for more than 40 years the CRF50F has introduced legions of riders the world over to the sport of motorcycling. It tips the scales at an unintimidating 110 pounds and the little CRF50F boasts a tough 49cc air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine renown for its durability plus an ultra-low seat height, automatic clutch, three-speed transmission and an inverted fork. Both of these machines represent the fun that turns the dreams of beginning riders into trail-time reality. CRF50F MSRP $1,499; CRF70F $1,899. Both models available in Red beginning October 2010.

- Options, Options and More Options: FourTrax Rancher Family
Year after year, more and more ATV riders come to sing the praises of the ready-and-willing FourTrax® Rancher®-and for good cause. This family of full-sized machines, assembled at Honda’s plant in Timmonsville, SC, has proven many times over to be the most dependable partner you could ever hope for, whether the day calls for work or fun. At the heart of each Rancher beats a powerful liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 420cc engine with convenient electric starting and plenty of grunt for getting the toughest jobs done. From there, it’s a matter of choosing the features that best fit your riding needs, conditions and desires.

Many Rancher fans swear by the base model FourTrax Rancher with its automatic clutch and manual-shift five-speed transmission with reverse because it’s such a workhorse. Other owners are equally enamored of the FourTrax Rancher ES with its remarkable Electric Shift Program (ESP®) that shifts with consummate ease with the touch of a handlebar-mounted button. Others will allow that while these two-wheel-drive Ranchers are great, the addition of the four-wheel-drive option found in the manual-shift FourTrax Rancher 4×4 and the ESP-equipped FourTrax Rancher 4×4 ES with their easy-to use TraxLok® 4WD/2WD selector makes a good thing even better. And then there are those who love to opt for the top-tier models, and in this case that would be the automatic-transmission 4×4 FourTrax Rancher AT and FourTrax Rancher AT with Electric Power Steering. Both of these upscale models feature five-speed auto-shifting or push-button ESP shifting, plus four-wheel disc brakes and independent rear suspension.

That’s a lot of variations on one great theme, but no matter which model you select you’ll see why Honda’s FourTrax Rancher has long remained a favorite. MSRP TBD. Two-wheel drive models available in Red and Olive; available early 2011. 4×4 models available in Red, Olive and Camo; available December 2010.

- The TRX250X Offers Full-Sized Fun
In the sport ATV category, the TRX250X delivers full-sized ergonomics and it’s also full of great features including electric starting and Honda’s innovative SportClutch™ that enables the rider to experience manual clutch actuation with the advantage of no stalling. That makes it easy to enjoy the plentiful power on tap and the five-speed transmission plus reverse for day-long adventuring. It’s no wonder that the sporty and fun-to-ride TRX250X continues to stand out as a favorite among beginners as well as longtime riders, year after year. MSRP TBD. Available in Red and Black beginning September 2010.

Honda Civic GX and FCX Clarity Retain California HOV Lane Access Until 2015

Monday, July 19th, 2010

U.S. – California drivers of the compressed natural gas (CNG) – powered Civic GX and zero-emissions FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle will continue to have access to the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) highway lane until January 2015. The recently passed California Assembly Bill 1500 extends HOV lane access to Inherently Low Emission Vehicles (ILEV), which includes cars that are certified zero emission and CNG vehicles. Before the extension was passed, existing ILEV HOV access stickers were set to expire January 1, 2011. Under the new law an unlimited number of HOV lane access stickers will be issued to eligible ILEV vehicles. The law takes effect January 1, 2011.

Honda is the only OEM currently selling a dedicated CNG-powered vehicle designed and manufactured for retail sale in the United States. The 2010 Civic GX achieves an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy of 24/36* miles per gasoline-gallon equivalent and is the only vehicle certified by the EPA to meet both Federal Tier 2-Bin 2 and Inherently Low Emission Vehicle (ILEV) zero evaporative emission certification standards**. The Civic GX is available at 43 dealers in California and is priced at $25,340***.

Civic GX owners can refuel at numerous public stations around California as well as at home with a Phill natural gas home refueling appliance. Sold by BRC FuelMaker, Phill connects to a home’s existing natural gas line and allows for convenient overnight fueling of the Civic GX.

The zero emissions, hydrogen powered FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle is available for lease-only in Southern California. The sleek and modern sedan is propelled by an electric motor that runs on electricity generated in an on-board hydrogen fuel cell. The FCX Clarity’s only emission is water, and its fuel efficiency is three times that of a modern gasoline-powered automobile and two times that of a gasoline-powered hybrid vehicle.

Honda on top after tough six months

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Australia – There are indicators that the motorcycle market should pick up before the end of the year, according to Honda Australia’s General Manager, Motorcycles, Tony Hinton, who is more than happy with the manufacturer’s number one retail position for the first six months of the year.
Honda sold 10,554 units sold across the various two and four wheel motorcycle segments in Australia during a continued sluggish period.

“The market overall has struggled to gain momentum due to the global financial crisis and numerous interest rate hikes, but Honda’s results have remained relatively stable with models such as the CRF50F fun bike, TRX250 ATV, CB400 LAMS bike and SCV100 Lead Scooter continuing to lead their class,” Mr Hinton said.

“We have had some issues to overcome like most manufacturers over the past 18 months, however, rates have settled down and consumer confidence should improve paving the way to stronger summer sales.”

“We are expecting to finish the year fairly well in a number of sectors including road bikes, and are pleased with how the first six months of the year has gone for us.” Honda produced five of the top ten overall selling models for the period including the CT110P, CRF250R motocrosser and CRF230F farm bike.

“We recently introduced a few new models into our line up including the retro CB1100, the very affordable VT750 and variations of the VT1300 chopper which are all doing very well.”

“For the second half of the year, we will be releasing an all new scooter that we think will be a big hit with the commuter market, and of course, offers all the Honda reliability and efficiency that our product development staff work so hard at to achieve.”

“Rider safety is also our priority as always, and we recently opened a new HART centre in Cranbourne, Victoria as well as moved our Queensland operation to a more suitable site in Brisbane.”

SUZUKI NEWS: Suzukis On The Podium In Daytona Sportbike At Mid-Ohio

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Brea, Calif – GEICO Powersports Suzuki’s Danny Eslick wowed the fans aboard his Suzuki GSX-R600 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio with his convincing win in the afternoon’s eventful Daytona Sportbike race. Danny began the race with a solid start, and quickly turned that start into a sizable lead.

Eslick’s lead was short-lived as he was soon challenged and eventually passed by two other riders, including M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas. The three front-runners traded positions several times during the first half of the race, but it was Eslick who was in the lead on lap eleven when Cardenas low-sided in the carousel corner. The resulting chaos allowed Danny to pull away from the competition and finish with an almost four and a half second lead.

Eslick had an excellent start in Saturday’s race as well, getting an early lead on his opponents thanks to the GSX-R’s quick acceleration, but at the finish line it was Martin Cardenas who was standing on the podium. Cardenas and his GSX-R600 started fourth on the grid, and by lap six had made it into the lead. Despite considerable pressure from his opponents behind him, Martin held on to the lead for the next ten laps. A few laps later Martin retook the lead, which he held for another two laps before being passed on the second to last lap. In all, Cardenas spent about half of the race in the lead, and finished with a solid third.

With the sixth round of the 2010 AMA American SuperBike Championship completed, Danny Eslick stands a mere two points out of the championship lead, and Cardenas just 25 points behind him. Round 7 takes place this weekend at Laguna Seca.
