Honda Up Front at Unadilla

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round nine of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship at Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin, NY on Saturday, August 14, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short and Kevin Windham continued to put in solid efforts aboard their CRF450R race machines while GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard secured his fourth-straight 250-class overall victory aboard his CRF250R.

As has been the case all Motocross season, Short was right in the thick of the action up front from the moment the starting gates dropped. The Honda Red Bull athlete was mixing it up among the top contenders in moto one before taking the checkers in fourth place. In moto two he got off to a flying start and moved into the lead on the opening lap but let go of several spots before the race’s end to finish in fifth place. His strong 4-5 results put him fourth overall for the round. Short’s teammate Windham didn’t get the best of starts in moto one and he was working his way through the pack when he crashed hard on lap five, forcing him out of the moto. The determined veteran returned in moto two ready to make amends and make amends he did. Windham charged hard, eventually getting past Short before going on to finish just shy of the moto two podium in fourth. Windham’s 39-4 result put him 12th overall for the round.

In other 450-class action, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe finished an impressive third overall after going 5-3 aboard his CRF450R. Honda privateer Kyle Regal went 8-6 to get fifth overall and Ben Townley raced his Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF450R to 7-9 moto finishes to nab sixth overall.

In 250cc competition, GEICO Powersports Honda had the top spots covered with Trey Canard clinching his fourth consecutive overall victory and teammate Justin Barcia finishing second overall. In the opening moto, the GEICO Powersports Honda teammates swept all top four spots with Canard sealing the win followed by Blake Wharton in second, Justin Barcia third and Eli Tomac grabbing fourth place. Canard got away to a flying start in moto two as he nailed the holeshot and charged away to an early lead. Solid out front for 14 laps, Canard relinquished a spot before the race’s end to finish in second place and his one-two result easily earned him the overall victory. Barcia put in a strong performance aboard his CRF250R on his home track, including leading five laps in moto one before going 3-5 for second overall. Wharton racked up 2-9 moto finishes for fifth overall and Tomac finished in sixth (4-6). Wil Hahn made his return to racing after being injured earlier in the season and finished 14-11 aboard his Troy Lee Designs Honda CRF250R for tenth overall.

Special Moriwaki-Made Trophies Await Young Winners at 2010 Indianapolis GP

Friday, August 27th, 2010

In just a few days, racers from around the globe will gather to compete at the 2010 Red Bull Indianapolis GP, held August 27 to 29. Many of these GP racers have already gained legendary status the world over. But in addition to these luminaries, a host of young racers aged 12-16 prepares for competition in a special youth class that will see them riding the Moriwaki MD250H powered by Honda. Perched at the brink of their budding careers, these young racers will step onto the biggest stage imaginable. The trophies that await the victors have been specially crafted by Moriwaki Engineering for this momentous occasion.

“Recognizing that the MD250H race at the 2010 Red Bull Indianapolis GP is truly a historic occasion, my father and I thought this is such a special event we should try to capture the passion both Honda and Moriwaki hold for racing and place that passion into a uniquely crafted trophy,” said Midori Moriwaki, Managing Director, Moriwaki Engineering Co. Ltd. “And so with this distinctive trophy we hope to inspire young racers and fans around the world to recognize that events such as this are a great way to enter the sport of racing and motor sports!

“Notice that the trophy stand is actually a triple clamp from a MD600 Moto2 racer, and the trophy itself takes the form of an MD250H—one laser-cut out of titanium plate that carries the coloration distinctive to Moriwaki exhaust silencers. This trophy symbolizes the ‘road to the world championship’; every young person who starts racing always dreams of becoming a world champion. So this trophy serves as a message for young riders: Your efforts are the first steps that may lead you toward becoming a champion.”

The Moriwaki MD250H is a purpose-built GP-style race bike that incorporates a Honda-built single-cylinder four-stroke engine sourced from the CRF250X. The MD250H also features an aluminum frame with massive main spars, a single radial-mount front disc brake, inverted fork, Pro-Link® single-shock rear suspension, racing wheels and tires, plus a works-style welded aluminum fuel tank. This is a formula that parallels the World Grand Prix Moto2 class, which features racing chassis engineered by various manufacturers, including Moriwaki, that all use a spec-built Honda engine based on the CBR600RR powerplant.

During the 2010 Red Bull Indianapolis GP, these young racers will compete on both Saturday and Sunday in points-paying events sanctioned by the United States Grand Prix Racers Union (USGPRU) that lead to $180,000 in contingency awards sponsored by Honda. The Saturday race flags off at 4:30 p.m. and the Sunday race begins early at 10:20 a.m.—don’t miss any of this exciting racing!

American Honda Moto2 Team Indy Test

Friday, August 27th, 2010

America - After two days of extensive testing at world-famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the final touches have been made to the American Honda Moto2 team’s Honda Moriwaki MD600 in preparation for the team’s debut at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on August 27 to 29. Under the leadership of team manager Kevin Schwantz and with the support of Kevin Erion and his Erion Racing crewmembers, Roger Lee Hayden completed two successful days of testing on his Honda-powered race machine.

After two previous tests - one at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway and a second at Barber Motorsports Park - it all came together at the team’s final test on August 19-20. “We’ve continued to improve on our lap times and more importantly Roger is getting more and more comfortable on the bike,” said Erion. “We made some changes to the swingarm and suspension settings and also worked on finding additional grip via changes to the shock and clutch setup.”

“Roger is communicating really well with the team, which has helped us identify exactly where our strengths and weaknesses are, and I think he’s riding the bike really well,” said Schwantz. Because motorcycles have not raced at Indy since the last USGP in 2009, the track was a bit “green.”

“Roger felt the track was pretty green on the motorcycle racing line on Thursday morning,” said Schwantz. “A few of us jumped on bikes at lunchtime and laid down 25 laps or so to put rubber on the racing line. When Roger went back out in the afternoon, the grip on the track was better. It all went well and I think we’re in good shape heading into the race next week.”

Hayden returned home to Kentucky after the team’s Barber test last month where he enjoyed a short break from his hectic international travel schedule. Feeling refreshed, Hayden is ready to make the team’s debut at the Indianapolis race.

“Testing went good,” said Hayden. “We learned that the Indianapolis track is a lot more like the first track we tested at (Chuckwalla) and very different from Barber. It’s actually tricky to gauge how fast we are at this point as the Moto2 class has never raced on this track and we don’t have specific lap times that we can measure our speed against. By looking at past MotoGP and 250cc lap times on this track we are able to get an indication of how fast we think we need to be and we believe we’re just about there. I really like riding this bike because it’s fairly small and in the tight, fast corners you can change direction so fast. It hits lines perfectly and I’m able to carry tons of corner speed through turns, which makes it a lot of fun.”

Honda Jazz Hybrid - Low Emissions and Practicality

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Japan: The Jazz Hybrid will make its world motor show debut at the Paris Motor Show in September, further demonstrating Honda’s continuing commitment to petrol-electric hybrid technology.

hybrid

The launch of the latest addition to the practical Jazz line-up will mark the first time a parallel hybrid vehicle has been available to B-segment consumers. The IMA hybrid motor and control system are shared with the Insight and CR-Z hybrids, taking advantage of the proven reliability of this important technology. With almost two decades of development and 10 years of sales behind it, the Honda IMA system has proven itself to be a flexible and dependable technology, with over half a million vehicles on the road benefitting from its combination of low emissions and fuel economy.

The new model will feature the same engine as the Insight hybrid, the 1.3 liter i-VTEC engine is combined with a CVT gearbox with an electric motor sandwiched between the two to create a parallel hybrid system. Like the Insight and Civic Hybrid models the Jazz Hybrid will be capable of running on the electric motor alone under some medium and low speed conditions.

Much of the Jazz’s practicality is derived from its height but despite being taller than the Insight, the Jazz Hybrid manages to maintain fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on comparable levels.

Visually the Jazz hybrid is distinguished from the current Jazz range with revised headlights, with a blue surround, clear rear lights, new front grille, restyled bumpers and a chrome tailgate garnish. The new hybrid will also be available in a range of existing colors plus a bespoke Lime Green metallic.

Inside the cabin is also given a fresh look with darker single color dashboard, which contrasts strongly with the blue lighting of the dials and stereo. The new hybrid is also available with leather trim, the first time this has been available on a Jazz model in Europe. The Jazz hybrid will go on sale in some European markets in the early part of 2011, prices and full specifications will be announced in due course.

Along with Jazz Hybrid, Honda stand will display a special edition of European made Civic, the 2011 model year Insight, CR-Z, the current petrol Jazz, CR-V, Accord and Accord Tourer, as well as the sports touring motorcycle VFR1200F equipped with “state-of-art” V4 engine, and a stylish PCX scooter with lower emission idle-stop 125cc engine.

Honda CR-Z Achieves Top Euro NCAP Overall Safety Rating

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Europe: The Honda CR-Z has been rated one of Europe‘s safest cars, following on from the success of the Honda Insight, according to the new independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP.

Euro NCAP’s rating scheme focuses on the vehicle’s overall safety performance which gives consumers an easy to understand single score. The system considers occupant protection in frontal, side, pole and rear impacts, child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of driver aids. The Honda CR-Z has been awarded the maximum 5-star rating.

The new rating scheme, introduced in February 2009, uses a weighted score, combining many aspects of a car’s safety performance: adult (50%), child (20%) and pedestrian (20%) protection assessment results with the availability of safety assistance devices (10%). To qualify for inclusion, safety assistance devices (VSA for Honda) must be fitted as standard across 90% of the EU 27 2010 model range.

The CR-Z is the most recent in a string of Honda cars to receive top marks. Since the introduction of the new rating scheme Euro NCAP have tested 4 other Honda models; Civic, Accord, Jazz and most recently, Insight. All 5 models achieved 5 stars, with the Honda Insight also being named “safest hybrid vehicle” as well as the 2nd safest vehicle tested in 2009.

Euro NCAP’s new assessment reflects Honda’s commitment to overall vehicle safety, complimenting Honda’s long standing in-house safety testing which seeks to improve real world safety. Honda’s car-to-car crash test facility at the Tochigi R&D center analyzes impacts between models of different sizes and weights and develops solutions to mitigate injuries for both for passengers and pedestrians. The omni-directional vehicle-to-vehicle crash test facility opened in 2001 and is the world’s first indoor all-weather facility of its type.

Safety in the Honda CR-Z

Vehicle Stability Assist
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking assistance to any of the wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

Braking
14″ ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes ensure road stability, which is further enhanced by the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE)
Developed in the car-to-car crash testing facility at Tochigi, the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is now a well-established strength of Honda’s safety credentials.

The ACE™ body structure is a Honda exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.

Pedestrian Protection
The CR-Z also incorporates many features designed with pedestrian-protection in mind. Research has shown that these features can dramatically improve a pedestrian’s chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle. Features include windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges, as well as an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Airbags and Seatbelts
On all models the driver and passenger Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front and side airbags are complemented by full length curtain airbags to protect all occupants. There are three-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts in all seating positions, the front seatbelts also have 2 stage Energy Absorption (EA) load limiting pretensioners. Additionally in the rear ISOFIX points ensure secure and correct installation mounting of child seats.

Active headrests
The CR-Z is equipped with front seat active headrests which reduce the likelihood of neck injury in rear impacts. As the occupant is pushed against the seat back, a rigid plate in the seat presses a link to the headrest pushing it up and forward to support the head.

2011 Acura MDX - Chassis

Friday, August 20th, 2010

CHASSIS DEVELOPMENT

From its inception the MDX targeted the dynamics and driving feel of its strongest European competitors. The essential elements of this engineering goal included steering, suspension, braking and overall dynamic performance, as well as excellent noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control.

In the early stages of MDX development, engineers tested European luxury SUV competitors including the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML, Porsche Cayenne and Volvo XC90. These experiences provided real-world understanding of how these luxury SUVs functioned in everyday driving on their “home turf.” Although later development testing was conducted in the United States, the DNA of the MDX was largely formed in Europe.

One essential tool that Acura used was the famed Nürburgring Nördschleife road circuit in Germany. This 13-mile course contains over 170 corners, numerous altitude changes and is considered the toughest natural road course in the world. Engineers used the Nürburgring as a “weakness finder” as it quickly exposes problems with a vehicle’s dynamics, making them easier to identify and fix.

In order to build in a combination of increased handling agility, increased stability and comfort, the current MDX’s wheelbase, tread width and suspension technology were changed from the first-generation MDX. Engineers changed the lift and squat characteristics of the suspension to provide a flatter handling. Thanks to the combination of its wheelbase and SH-AWD®, the 2011 MDX offers both exceptional high-speed stability and responsive handling.

FRONT SUSPENSION

The MDX’s entire front chassis was tuned to provide the best balance of handling precision, road isolation and impact aftershake damping. MacPherson struts team with coil-over springs and lower control arms constructed of forged aluminum to reduce unsprung weight.

The front subframe “floats” on rubber mounts to provide road and engine isolation, and the subframe assembly is affixed to the main body structure with heavy-duty braces. The front suspension also uses hydro-compliance bushings to provide excellent ride isolation as well as excellent chassis vibration control. Suspension and engine mounts are specifically tuned to provide minimum vibration transfer to the occupants, and the front struts employ internal rebound springs to improve ride and handling. Anti-dive properties were specially tuned to reduce impact harshness and improve ride comfort.
