Honda Jet Program Update Announced at 2010 EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

USA - Honda Aircraft Company, Inc., released a program update for its HondaJet advanced light jet program highlighting the milestone achievement of Power-On for its first conforming flight test aircraft. Also announced was the successful consolidation of fuselage and wing assemblies for the first static test aircraft, which will be subjected to static structural testing beginning in August.

The recently concluded Power-On tests for the first conforming aircraft included confirmation of power supply both from the on-board battery to the aircraft’s Power Distribution System and from the external Ground Power Unit to the Power Distribution System.

“The success of our Power-On tests is an important step in the completion of the first conforming flight test aircraft,” said Honda Aircraft Company President & CEO Michimasa Fujino. “With this significant milestone achieved, we are now focused on the integration of avionics and other electrical systems in anticipation of first flight later this year.”

Concurrently, consolidation has been achieved for the wing and fuselage assemblies of the first static test aircraft. The first static test aircraft incorporates over 1,800 strain gauges that will be used to evaluate the aircraft’s performance during stress testing.

Stress testing is being conducted at Honda Aircraft Company’s R&D facility on its Greensboro campus utilizing Honda’s advanced MTS FlexTest® structural test system. The system incorporates 61 hydraulic actuators and a 2,600-channel data acquisition system within a structural test fixture designed exclusively for HondaJet testing. The entire aircraft can be tested simultaneously to prove static and fatigue strength under various flight and ground load conditions. Honda’s test facility includes an environmental chamber to simulate hot-wet conditions, which is required testing for the validation of composite structures.

Stress testing already is well underway with the completion of testing of sub-component and control surfaces. These components have been successfully tested to ultimate load under FAA supervision at Honda’s Greensboro facility.

While the assembly and testing of aircraft continue, Honda is nearing completion of the superstructure for the HondaJet production facility on its Greensboro campus and will next begin the installation of electrical and plumbing within the facility. The 250,000 ft2 production facility is scheduled for total completion in early 2011, at which time pre-production preparations and training of production staff will begin. The HondaJet production facility also will house Flight Safety International Level-D, full-motion flight simulators for training of all HondaJet pilots and crew.

Following its appearance at this year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the proof-of-concept HondaJet will travel to Lexington, Ohio, to participate in the Honda Indy 200 Mid-Ohio IRL race on August 8. Celebrating Honda’s challenging spirit and its passion for speed, the HondaJet will perform a demonstration flight above the track prior to the start of the race. The annual Ohio stop on the Indy Racing League tour is conducted at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, which features a 2.25-mile, 13-turn circuit that is considered one of the most challenging race circuits in the U.S. With a top speed of 420 kts (483 mph), the HondaJet is sure to become the fastest Honda in the history of the event.

Torrance, CA: The Honda Red Riders took on round seven of the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship and Women’s Motocross Championship at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, MN and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short, Kevin Windham and Ashley Fiolek led the way aboard their CRF450R and CRF250R race machines while GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard captured his second-straight overall 250-class victory aboard his CRF250R.

With Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps out with an injury, veteran Honda racer Windham joined Short on the team to contest the 450 class aboard the CRF450R. In moto one, Windham got away to a flying start, grabbing the holeshot and racing to an early lead which he held for seven laps. Windham surrendered a few spots before the race’s end, including a spot to Short, to finish moto one in a solid fifth position. Once by Windham, Short continued to press hard among the leaders and eventually finished third. In moto two it was Short who was fastest out of the starting gate, grabbing the holeshot before fellow Honda racer Ben Townley got by aboard his Troy Lee Designs CRF450R to take the lead. Short retaliated with a series of aggressive maneuvers to regain control of the lead on lap two. A lap later, Short surrendered the lead and ultimately finished moto two in third place—putting him second overall for the round. Windham was never far away, taking the checkers in fourth spot for fourth overall.

“It feels so good to be back racing motocross,” said Windham. “I was pumped to get such a good start and holeshot the first moto. I came into the first round not knowing where I stood in terms of race speed as I haven’t raced motocross in the 450-class since 2007. I personally was hoping for a top-ten finish, so to get fourth overall is awesome. It was definitely a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can do at the next round.”

In more 450-class action, privateer Honda racer Kyle Regal scored another solid result aboard his CRF450R, going 8-2 to finish the round third overall. Townley placed fifth overall with 4-5 moto finishes and GEICO Powersports Honda’s Brett Metcalfe went 16-6 to get ninth overall.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard made it two wins in a row in the 250 class, going 2-1 aboard his CRF250R to clinch his second consecutive overall victory. From start to finish, Canard battled back and forth for the lead in moto one before settling for the number two spot. Come moto two, the Honda Red Rider got away to a good start and quickly moved into the top spot, where he soon extended a lengthy lead he would never relinquish, clinching the overall victory. Teammate Justin Barcia joined Canard on the moto two podium and his 16-3 moto finishes put him eighth overall. Blake Wharton raced his GEICO Powersports Honda CRF250R to sixth overall (5-7) and teammate Eli Tomac went 13-11 to end the round 11th overall.

“I’m so happy right now,” said Canard. “It was tough work in the heat and humidity but I got the job done and I’m really happy about that. It’s nice to be able to make it two in a row for the GEICO Powersports Honda team.”

Ashley Fiolek finished moto one in third position but retaliated in moto two to dominate the competition and clinch her third moto win of the season and finish second overall for the round. Fastest out of the start gate in both races, Fiolek held off the competition to claim both holeshots. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Tara Gieger joined Fiolek on the podium, going 2-4 to end the round third overall.

2011 Honda CRF450R and CRF250R 1st Look

USA - Honda has released the first tidbits of information on the 2011 Honda CRF450R and 2011 Honda CRF250R motocross bikes. There isn’t much to go on from this point, but the major motocross models are slightly revised and essentially all of the remaining lineup looks to be carryover with the exception of a few machines.

2011 Honda CRF450R – MSRP $8199
Honda claims better low and midrange power from its Unicam, four-valve motor by using “various tweaks to the engine tuning.” A new 46mm throttle body is incorporated for better throttle response. The linkage is revised along with new suspension settings. Inside the fork is a lighter cartridge cylinder and the front and rear suspension both get updated valving. Honda says the result is improved rear-wheel traction and a plusher ride. Big Red still makes use of its proprietary Honda Progressive Steering Damper (HPSD) which gets a swollen piston for ’11 jumping from 20mm to 24mm. Expect to see the new 2011 Honda CRF450R in dealerships this October.

2011 Honda CRF250R – MSRP $7199
Honda updated last year’s CRF250R in a big way with an all-new fuel-injected engine. Without any specifics available yet, the 250R gets a similar treatment to the big bike – better bottom and midrange power, larger HPSD piston and new suspension valving. Both the 450 and 250 are supposed to meet a 94 decibel limit with new exhaust mufflers.

2011 Honda CRF70F and CRF50F – MSRP $1899 (70F) and $1499 (50F)
Honda is also updating its smallest dirt bikes, the CRF70F and CRF50F. The only differences are new graphics (bold, of course) and a new color on upper fork tubes.

Harley-Davidson second-quarter 2010 results show continued improvement in key areas

MILWAUKEE - Harley-Davidson, Inc. reported second-quarter 2010 income from continuing operations of $139.3 million, or $0.59 per share, compared to income of $33.4 million and earnings per share of $0.14 from continuing operations in the year-ago quarter. Second-quarter 2010 results include operating income from Financial Services of $60.8 million. Revenue from Motorcycles and Related Products was $1.14 billion in the second quarter.

Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson® motorcycles decreased 5.5 percent in the quarter compared to the second quarter of 2009, a sequential moderation in the rate of decline from the prior four quarters. In the U.S., retail new Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales were down 8.4 percent and in international markets, retail sales were largely flat, down 0.2 percent compared to last year’s second quarter.

For the first six months of 2010, Harley-Davidson income from continuing operations was $208.0 million, or $0.89 per share, a 28.9 percent increase from the year-ago period.

“Harley-Davidson is making steady progress at executing its strategy to deliver results through focus,” said Keith Wandell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “We are seeing the benefits of our restructuring and continuous improvement activities reflected in our earnings performance.

“We are pleased with the continued moderation in the rate of decline of retail new Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales again in the second quarter. Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Related Products Segment

Second-Quarter Segment Results: Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the second quarter of 2010 of $831.6 million was up 2.8 percent compared to the year-ago period. In line with guidance, the Company shipped 59,046 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide during the quarter, compared to shipments of 58,179 motorcycles in the second quarter of 2009.

Revenue from Parts and Accessories totaled $231.8 million during the quarter, up 0.2 percent, and revenue from General Merchandise, which includes MotorClothes® apparel, was $67.4 million, down 3.2 percent compared to the year-ago period.

Gross margin was 35.0 percent in the second quarter, compared to 34.1 percent in the year-ago period. Second-quarter operating margin decreased to 13.9 percent from 15.3 percent in the second quarter of 2009.

Six-Month Segment Results: Through the first six months of 2010, shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were 112,720 units, a 15.2 percent decrease compared to last year’s 132,849 units for the period. Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles through six months was $1.64 billion, a 9.8 percent decrease compared to the year-ago period. Six-month P&A revenue was $380.9 million, a 5.0 percent decrease from the first half of 2009. General Merchandise revenue was $133.6 million, a 7.7 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2009. Gross margin through six months was

35.7 percent and operating margin was 13.1 percent, compared to 35.7 percent and 16.8 percent respectively in last year’s first half.

Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales

During the second quarter of 2010, dealer retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 5.5 percent worldwide, 8.4 percent in the U.S. and 0.2 percent in international markets, compared to the prior-year quarter. Second-quarter retail results reflect a sequential moderation in the rate of decline from the prior four quarters, although the basis for comparison has decreased over that period. Industry-wide U.S. heavyweight motorcycle (651cc-plus) retail unit sales decreased 10.1 percent in the second quarter compared to the year-ago period.

Through six months, worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 10.7 percent compared to the prior-year period. U.S. retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 15.3 percent for the first half of the year while the U.S. heavyweight market segment was down 14.7 percent for the same period, compared to the year-ago period. In international markets, retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 1.1 percent for the first six months of 2010 compared to 2009.

Honda to Begin Demonstration Tests of Next-Generation Personal Mobility before the End of the Year in Kumamoto and Saitama

Japan - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced plans to begin real-world demonstration testing before the end of this year of next-generation electric personal mobility products, including electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, electric scooters and electric carts. The demonstration program will be conducted jointly with Kumamoto and Saitama prefectures in Japan.

In a comprehensive approach unique to Honda to be conducted in collaboration with the two municipalities, Honda’s electromotive technologies for motorcycles, automobiles and power products, together with information and communication technologies, a solar-powered energy station and other technologies will be utilized under the real-world urban transportation environment to address the following two agendas:

1. Verification of the effectiveness of next-generation personal mobility products with electromotive technologies, specifically electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, electric scooters and electric carts, along with utilization of sustainable energy such as solar power for the realization of a low-carbon society in the future.

2. Study of how future personal mobility and the urban transportation system should be designed to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life (QOL*) of local residents.

By partnering with Kumamoto and Saitama prefectures, where Honda operations including manufacturing plants are located and collaborative relationships already exist in various areas, Honda will strive to effectively conduct verification testing and make further contributions to both communities.

Honda is planning to conduct this demonstration first in Japan and then in regions outside Japan such as the U.S., mostly in the area of automobiles. In the U.S., starting by the end of this year, Honda will begin demonstration testing of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles with participants including Stanford University, Google Inc. and the City of Torrance, California under the Advanced Technology Demonstration Program.

[Experiment in Kumamoto prefecture]

Honda will verify the effectiveness of its electromotive technologies and information and communication technologies to realize a low-carbon mobility society and to improve the QOL of local residents in the face of an aging society. Prior to the start of the experiment, Honda and Kumamoto prefecture will sign a framework agreement on the experiment of the next-generation personal mobility.

Using experimental models of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as the EV-neo electric scooter, Honda will verify the effectiveness of such personal mobility to realize low-carbon mobility within the prefecture.
By monitoring the positional and operational information of participating Monpal ML200 electric carts, Honda will verify how such personal mobility will contribute to the QOL, especially the quality of the daily life and health of local residents in the face of an aging society.
By establishing and utilizing recharging stations that use thin-film solar cells manufactured by Honda Soltec, Honda will verify the effectiveness of the system which reduces CO2 from the energy-supply phase.

[Experiment in Saitama prefecture]

Honda will verify the effectiveness of its electromotive technologies and information and communication technologies to realize a low-carbon mobility society in the future. This experiment will be conducted based on an agreement about collaboration in the area of the environment, which Honda and Saitama prefecture signed in March 2009.

Using experimental models of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as EV-neo electric scooter, Honda will verify the effectiveness of such personal mobility to realize low-carbon mobility within the prefecture.
Using EV-neo electric scooter, Honda will verify the possibility of increasing the efficiency of energy use. By monitoring positional and operational information of participating EV-neo scooters, Honda will verify the effectiveness of improved efficiency during the business use of such personal mobility.
Utilizing the function of InterNavi Premium Club, Honda’s original interactive information network service for automobiles, Honda will provide information related to the recharging of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as information to support eco-driving.

Honda Announces Direction for Automobile Production in Japan

Japan - In the face of a global trend toward consumer preference for smaller vehicles as well as increasing environmental awareness, Honda has reviewed the increasingly important role to be played by its production plants in Japan and determined three areas of focus.

1) Pursuit of advanced manufacturing technologies for environmentally-responsible products and small-sized vehicles.
2) Efficient production of the products to be sold in Japan.
3) Strengthening the support functions for Honda plants outside of Japan.

Based on this determination of the focus areas, the direction was determined for the two new plants in Japan where plans have been pending.

[Yorii plant in Saitama]
The Yorii plant will be indispensable in Honda’s effort to strengthen cost and quality competitiveness and to establish the necessary and highly sophisticated next-generation manufacturing technologies for the production of environmentally-responsible products and low CO2 emissions production. Further, the plant will take the lead to evolve such manufacturing technologies to other Honda production operations around the world. As a result, Honda will resume preparation of the Yorii plant with a goal to begin production in 2013.

The Yorii plant will create new value and innovative technologies that can be achieved only at the Yorii plant and lead other Honda plants around the world as a state-of-the-art, next-generation plant which pursues energy efficiency while being at the forefront in the area of the environment.

The Yorii plant will start with small-volume production of environmentally-responsible vehicles which require highly sophisticated manufacturing technologies in order to mature its advanced technologies, then it will gradually increase production volume. The Yorii plant will then evolve such manufacturing technologies, that are a key to the next-generation of Honda, to other Honda operations around the world to achieve the global growth of Honda.

[Starting mini-vehicle production at the Suzuka Factory and cancelling the construction of a new Yachiyo plant in Yokkaichi]
To accommodate the global shift toward smaller vehicles, Honda will begin production of mini-vehicles at its Suzuka Factory in 2012. Through mini-vehicle production at Suzuka Factory, Honda will establish manufacturing technologies that will contribute to the effort to reduce the bodyweight and cost of Honda’s next-generation models. Such manufacturing technologies will be applied to small-sized vehicles, and then evolved from Suzuka to other Honda production operations around the world.

Based on this decision, Yachiyo Industry decided to cancel the planned construction of a new Yachiyo plant. The mini-vehicle production at Yachiyo’s existing plant will be continued.

Honda to Expand Annual Motorcycle Production Capacity in Indonesia

Japan - PT Astra Honda Motor (AHJ), Honda’s joint venture company in Indonesia responsible for motorcycle production and sales, announced plans to expand its annual motorcycle production capacity to 3.5 million units before the end of this year, and then construct a new plant with an annual production capacity of 500,000 units to expand total capacity to 4 million units before the end of 2011.

In order to meet growing demand for motorcycles in Indonesia, AHJ recently increased its annual production capacity from 3 million units as of the end of 2009, to 3.3 million units as of the end of May 2010, through the addition of a new line to an existing plant. Now, AHJ will further increase its capacity to 3.5 million units by the end of 2010. The new plant will be built on the grounds of the third plant, and is scheduled to become operational in the latter half of 2011. The total investment for the new plant will be approximately 760 billion Rupiah (approximately 7.4 billion yen*). AHJ’s total employment will increase from the current 16,000 to 17,000 associates at full capacity.

In addition, AHJ has enhanced its lineup of automatic transmission (AT) models by introducing three new AT models in August 2009, a new scooter model, Scoopy, in May 2010, and a new strategic global model scooter, PCX, in June 2010. Moreover, AHJ today introduced a new Cub-type AT model, Revo AT, which is equipped with the CV-Matic, Honda’s newly developed automatic transmission for Cub-style scooters. AHJ’s sales plan for 2010 is approximately 3.21 million units, (up about 20% compared to 2009) and actual sales is expected to exceed the 2009 sales result (approximately 2.7 million units).

Industry-wide motorcycle sales in Indonesia, which is now the third largest motorcycle market in the world after only China and India, totaled approximately 5.85 million units in 2009, and is expected to reach a record high of approximately 6.8 million units this year. AHJ will continue to add a number of new models in order to fulfill demand from a broader range of customers in the rapidly growing market.

In order to accommodate the dramatic growth of the motorcycle market in Asia, Honda will expand motorcycle production capacities in India, Vietnam and Indonesia before the end of 2011. As a result, Honda’s overall annual motorcycle production capacity in the company’s Asian Region (excluding Japan) will increase from the current 16 million units to 18 million units by the end of 2011.
